During a dreamy stay in the seaside village of Longbeach, Horace Medway falls in love with May Newton, their growing affection seeming to echo the calm sea and the ruins that overlook it. But when duty sends him to London and the pressures of mercantile work sour his temper, the romance begins to fray; a winter reunion ends in heartbreak when proud, sensitive May breaks off their engagement. Haunted by regret, Horace is later sent toward Monksbury on business, only to be drawn back into the past when he glimpses May at a railway station and follows her vanished figure into mystery. At Fern Cottage and then in Richmond, he discovers that May has been gravely ill, her suffering deepened by separation. Charlotte Newton's tenderness reveals both May's hidden anguish and the uncanny dream in which, half-asleep by an open window, she seemed to sense danger. That vision proves lifesaving when Horace learns the train he left was wrecked. Reunited at last, the lovers find a joyful reconciliation in this poignant tale of love, remorse, intuition, and the mysterious bond between hearts. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.
