In 1839, Henry David Thoreau and his brother John set out on a two-week journey by rowboat from Concord, Massachusetts, to the White Mountains of New Hampshire and back. A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers, published in 1849, recounts that journey through a series of essays organized by the days of the week. Thoreau meditates on nature, history, philosophy, and literature as the rivers carry him through the New England landscape. The book was Thoreau's first major publication, written during his time at Walden Pond and serving as a tribute to his brother John, who had died of lockjaw in 1842.Perfect for readers who appreciate transcendentalist philosophy and American nature writing, this lyrical journey offers a profound exploration of time, memory, and the natural world that anticipates Thoreau's masterwork Walden.
