The story follows the newlywed couple, Lucía and Pedro, who embark on a honeymoon trip to the Basque Country. The trip, meant to be a joyful beginning to their married life, soon reveals the underlying tensions and incompatibilities in their relationship. Lucía, a young and innocent woman, enters the marriage with idealized notions of love and companionship, influenced by the romantic literature of the time. However, she quickly discovers that her husband, Pedro, is not the romantic hero she had envisioned.Pedro, a pragmatic and somewhat insensitive man, is more interested in the social advantages of marriage than in cultivating a loving relationship with his wife. His neglect and indifference toward Lucía's emotional needs become apparent as the trip progresses. Lucía's disillusionment grows as she realizes that the reality of marriage is far from the idyllic picture she had imagined.
