There is a particular kind of dark that every searching soul knows.
Not the darkness of despair. But the darkness of the one who is genuinely looking — who has felt the ache that no achievement has quieted, who has tried what the world offers and found it insufficient, who carries a question that no circumstance has yet fully answered.
It is in this darkness that a sound from afar acts like a light.
A Sound From Afar is a contemplative journey through the interior life. It begins with the prayer beneath all prayers — the cry of the scattered soul asking to be united, to be brought home. It moves through the confusion of a world that offers too many answers and not enough light. Through the exhaustion of looking outward. Through the crack that lets the light in. Through the turning inward, the preparation of the vessel, the grace that goes all the way in — to the returning. The soul finding its way back to what it was always sent here to find.
Drawing from the wisdom of Rumi, Rabia al-Adawiyya, Hafez, Bulleh Shah, Ibn Ata Allah, Al-Ghazali and others who walked this territory before us — this book does not claim to be the light. It is simply a sound. Carried across the centuries from souls who found what the searching soul is looking for. Offered in the humble hope that something in it might act, for the soul that receives it, like a light in whatever darkness that soul is in.
This is not a book of instructions. It is not a religious manual or a self-help guide. It is a companion for the searching soul. Written from one searching heart to another. In the belief that the sound from afar — however faint, however distant — always reaches the soul that is genuinely listening.
If it reaches you in your particular darkness — if something in it acts, even briefly, like a light — then it has done what a sound from afar is meant to do.
Listen.
