The memoir opens with Drumgoold’s recollections of her early life in bondage, depicting the hardships and challenges she faced as a child enslaved in the antebellum South. She poignantly describes her relationships with her family, particularly her mother, and the cruel realities of slavery. Following the Civil War, Drumgoold experiences the transition from slavery to freedom, emphasizing her deep desire for education and self-improvement.After moving to the North, Drumgoold pursued education, ultimately becoming a teacher and a missionary. The book not only narrates her personal struggles and triumphs but also serves as a testament to the resilience and determination of African American women in the post-slavery era. A Slave Girl's Story is both a personal memoir and a larger commentary on the possibilities of life after slavery, offering an inspiring look at how education and faith shaped Drumgoold's journey toward freedom and self-empowerment.
