Repeated pasta meals have told teenager Kevin Logan that his mother’s finances are razor thin. His search for a way to help has led him to a wooded area on the edge of town where he suddenly hears a cry for help and finds an abandoned cabin with a locked cellar door. He breaks in, descends into the cold, dark space below and finds a dog, starving, abused and left to die in the dark. He won’t let that happen.
A special bond develops between them as Kevin realizes this dog has unique skills unlike any other. He can hear her thoughts. The man who held her captive, Dave Branson, is determined to get her back and Kevin, his friends and family are all in danger.
Dave Branson landed in this one-horse town planning to stay only a few days. The men he’d been dealing with were dangerous and he had good reason to fear them. The weapons he’d been buying and delivering for them were not your average hunting weapon and the comments the men made hinted at something big coming. He’d tried to shrug it off as ‘not his problem’ but doubt nagged at him. Getting the dog back to serve as an early warning system now came second to what he should do about the threat he saw looming over this odd little town. Does he protect himself and just cut and run? Or can he find some way to stop the attack he fears is coming?
