"A Sailor Boy with Dewey" by Captain Ralph Bonehill is a riveting adventure set in the Philippines during a period of significant transition, exploring themes of civilization, colonization, and the clash of cultures. The story follows Oliver and his friend Dan, who embark on a voyage aboard the schooner Dart bound for Manila Bay. They quickly find themselves facing the perils of the sea and the volatile behavior of their drunken captain, Kenny. As the crew struggles against a brewing storm, Oliver and Dan's courage and leadership are put to the test, culminating in a catastrophic collision with a Chinese vessel. In the aftermath, the narrative delves into themes of survival and loyalty, as Oliver and Dan are separated during the scramble to abandon ship. Oliver's resolve is further tested when he rescues Captain Kenny, despite the captain's self-centered demeanor. As they navigate these treacherous waters, the story reflects on the complexity of human relationships and the essence of true friendship. The tale takes a gripping turn when Oliver and Dan, now in Manila, are mistakenly arrested as rebel sympathizers, facing potential execution. Their daring escape from prison underscores themes of courage and the fight for freedom. As tensions with Spain escalate, the duo navigates the political turmoil and dangers of the era, eventually returning to Hong Kong. There, they rescue Lieutenant Clare Todd from assailants, earning the respect of Commodore Dewey and setting the stage for further adventures amid the impending war. Through thrilling escapades and personal growth, "A Sailor Boy with Dewey" offers young readers an exciting narrative filled with bravery, camaraderie, and the harsh realities of a world on the brink of conflict.
