A Note in Music by Rosamond Lehmann is a sensitive psychological novel that explores loneliness, marriage, and the inner emotional life of a young woman. The story centers on Grace Fairfax, an intelligent and imaginative woman trapped in an unhappy marriage with a cold and self-absorbed husband. Living in a dull suburban environment, Grace struggles with feelings of isolation and emotional frustration while trying to preserve her sense of identity and inner freedom. Through Grace’s reflections, memories, and quiet observations of everyday life, the novel portrays the contrast between external domestic routine and deep personal longing. Music becomes a symbol of beauty, escape, and emotional expression in a life overshadowed by disappointment and misunderstanding. Written in a lyrical and introspective style, A Note in Music is regarded as one of Lehmann’s finest early works, notable for its subtle psychological depth and compassionate portrayal of female experience in early twentieth-century England.
