Because she could read and write, Jenny was assigned to work as a page setter in the printing department, where she earned twenty-two dollars a month.
She greatly envied the female typists in the editorial office upstairs.
They spent their days in the clean editorial office instead of toiling in the stinking factory, earned higher salaries, and could even afford the gold necklaces displayed in the department store's display cases.
However, to land such a good position, one either needed money to buy gifts for the secretaries or had to ask someone influential to write a letter of recommendation.
Unfortunately, Jenny was still renting a room in the attic of a relative's house; she was as penniless as she was pretty, and looked all around but found no one who could help her.
Her parents, who farmed far away in Pennsylvania, wrote to urge her not to aim too high, but to find a capable craftsman to marry and start a family sooner rather than later.
But the New York she saw out the window was so vibrant, and deep down, Jenny found those craftsmen a bit too rough around the edges and a bit too poor.
She felt a sense of resentment, but that very night, she accidentally hit her head and blacked out.
When her memory returned, Jenny discovered that in her previous life, she had been a copy editor in another world.
Things seemed to be getting complicated.
