A Life: One Hundred Sonnets, One Hundred Stories is a hybrid work. The series of a hundred sonnets tells the story of a fictive life, from the first year to the hundredth. Each of the years focuses, for the most part, on a single, vital event. For year one, the unnamed character speaks his first word. For year one hundred, he dies. (Please note, my revelation that the character dies is not a spoiler; all of us will die.) The story begins in 1960 and ends in 2060. Early in the series, references, such as music, movies and television are era appropriate. In the last third, the series contains science fiction elements, such as environmental and violence concerns and medical and technological advancements. The story relates the man's ascent into adulthood, his marriage, family and career. Many of the sonnets are light in topic, while others are far darker. All but two of the poems are in the structure of the Shakespearean Sonnet. The lines are often enjambed and prosaic. A few of the rhymes and meters are imperfect. As with the enjambment, the effect is prosaic. While this work is a story, I hope many of the sonnets are relatable generally. We see ourselves best, sometimes, in seeing others. This is true for me. I often see others acting foolishly, then realize I do the same thing. I hope you enjoy this work and see yourself within these words.
