In the book, Grenfell recounts his early life, education, and what led him to pursue medical missionary work in the harsh climates of Labrador. He describes his early voyages to the region, where he witnessed the poverty and health struggles of the fishing communities, prompting him to establish hospitals, schools, and other social services to improve the quality of life for the people. His work often involved long, perilous journeys by dog sled and boat, and Grenfell shares stories of dramatic rescues, dangerous storms, and medical emergencies. The memoir not only highlights Grenfell’s medical practice but also showcases his deep compassion and dedication to the well-being of the Labrador and Newfoundland people. His writing is filled with adventurous spirit and humanitarian concern, detailing the challenges of bringing modern medical care to a remote and underserved population. His work inspired the creation of the Grenfell Mission, an organization that continued his legacy of service in the region.
