New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. These are the focal points of Henry C. Vedder's classic work, A History of the Baptists in the Middle States. From their first congregations (which were decidedly different in doctrine from today's Baptist Churches) to their growth into a well-established denominational body, this book is both informative and easy to read (something that is rare in many histories).
This book covers the controversies over the Disciples of Christ, the Masons and anti-Masons, American Bible Union, the attempted stealing of a university, and much, much more!
One striking thing that is revealed in this book is what issues the early Baptists refused to make tests of fellowship. You'll be surprised!
"Henry C. Vedder has written an interesting history, accurate in its details, fluid in speech, and fair in his dealings even with those who were opposed to certain points of Baptist doctrine." -a Non-Baptist.
