The first edition was followed by several others, two of which were necessitated respectively by the Married Women's Property Acts of 1870 and 1874. Since then the Married Women's Property Act, 1882, has increased the area of property which a wife can deal with as her own, and has gone further towards setting her free in commercial and other business and employments. This Act is so defective both in expression and arrangement, that one would imagine it was hurriedly introduced, and was afterwards amended, by various hands in its passage through Parlia ment.
