The domestic life of a powerful, authoritarian father begins to crumble when his family finally revolts against his controlling nature. While he prides himself on his public standing, his private relationships are defined by coldness and missed connections. This biting social satire deconstructs the patriarchal ego and the holloys of middle-class respectability. Galsworthy uses sharp dialogue to expose the irony of a man who can manage an empire but cannot understand his own children. It is a timeless look at the disconnect between public image and private reality.
