The Cyber Security Research Institute at Norwich University brings you the 2017 Annual Report of Top Cyber Security Incidents. While the fallout from the Russian cyber operations in the 2016 Presidential election were fresh in everyone's mind, there were many noteworthy cybersecurity incidents in 2017. Russia continued its cyber-attacks, most notably in the Ukraine and the effects were felt across the globe. We also got a look behind the curtain at the Central Intelligence Agency's cyber operations when hackers leaked the CIA's cyber techniques and tools to Wikileaks. Not to be outdone by their sister Intelligence Agency, the National Security Agency was also compromised and their tool, Eternal Blue, was used to create the WaanaCry Ransomware which affected user in over 150 countries. In total we examined 14 cybersecurity incidents that span the commercial, military and government cyberspace. As you will see, no one is immune from cyber-attacks and the old cliché still holds true, the best offense is good defense. So be sure to keep your computer systems up to date with the latest security patches and follow good cybersecurity hygiene.
