James Buchanan is a Fire-medic hanging by a thread. After a series of troubling calls, one involving the death of his estranged father and another where a six-year-old is brutally murdered, he decides to take the law into his own hands when a local child predator has escapes justice. Meanwhile, he confronts his own repressed history of abuse. Back at the station things are crazy as usual. Jim's ladder truck crashes and hangs off a bridge over icy water.
